Indian Packaging Industry

Why does any finished good require a package? Why cannot it be sold openly? A package provides prevention, protection, and resistance from tampers. It might also be used to store special physical, chemical, or biological needs. Packages may also bear facts about nutrition, ingredients, and manufacturing. These needs arise the packaging industry of India. There are different types of packages for different types of products. The packaging for furniture won’t be applicable for the packaging of a food item. Further, there can be different types of packaging of the same product. For example, packaging types include wrappers, packets, rolls, etc.

Packaging plays a very important role in consumers’ experience. This is said with respect to the brand outcasting and the overall purchasing experience for the consumer. There are four major functions of packaging

  1. Containment

  2. Protection

  3. Communication

  4. Utility.

These are the reasons with which the marketers intend to maximize sales and profits while reducing losses and wastage. All of the above functions are critical for enhancing the consumer experience.

The packaging industry contributes the most to the following types of products in India:

  1. Food and beverages packaging

  2. Transit and omnichannel packaging

  3. Pharmaceuticals and related products packaging

  4. Consumer goods packaging

India has witnessed a substantial surge in the e-commerce sector over the past 5-6 years. The rise of small e-businesses has further contributed to the rise of the packaging industry as these small businesses use packaging as one of their most important USP and for the establishment of their branding. With pandemic and lockdown, the surge had increased exponentially as many women and young teens joined the sector.

Since the pandemic, companies have been upgrading their products, marketing strategies, and service offerings to cater to the evolving needs of consumers. They have become highly focused on matters the most today – safety, immunity and health. Different types of food packaging, healthcare products packaging, consumer goods packaging, etc. have been perked up to provide the topmost sanitation for the consumer experience.

Examples:

To cope with the pandemic, Swiggy introduced a double-layered packaging that not only kept the food fresh but also safe. Nature’s Basket switched from cloth bags to single-use paper bags (because they can be disposed of immediately after use). Packaged food product companies are focussing on packaging materials that support longer shelf-life. A few others are updating their packing designs to include communication around appropriate sanitization and better hygiene. Irrespective of the branding techniques and marketing strategies adopted by the company, each of those strategies end up with an impact on packaging.

Packaging is now seen as a key bridge between consumers and brands to effectively communicate that hygiene is maintained, safety is prioritized and product or service quality is not being compromised.

Packaging already had a pivotal role in the consumer buying experience in the e-commerce world. And now, its impact has even grown bigger. This sector will continue to ride the e-commerce wave long into the future.
