FSSAI prescribes labelling requirements of pre-packaged foods and display


There is a development on FSSAI’s previous decision regarding the labeling requirements of pre-packaged food which came in the year 2019. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020, which outline the requirements for pre-packaged food labelling and the display of critical information on premises where food is manufactured, processed, served, and stored.

According to the FSSAI rules for packaging, the Food Business Operator (FBO) must comply with all provisions of these regulations one year after their publication in the Official Gazette, with the exception of Chapter 3 (display of information in food service establishments), which the FBO must comply with by January 1, 2022.

According to the regulations, the term "primary display panel" refers to the section of the container/package that is intended or likely to be exhibited, presented, shown, or studied by the client under usual and customary conditions of exhibition, sale, or purchase of the food item included therein.

FSSAI rules for packaging says that a food label is required on all prepackaged foods, and it must include specific obligatory information. General food labelling regulations apply to all foods, and any labelling provided must be accurate and not deceptive.

The labelling requirement also contains a food additive declaration, the name and complete address of the relevant brand owner, manufacturer, marketer, packer, or bottler, if applicable, and the FSSAI emblem with license number.

A descriptive name for the food must be provided if there is no customary name or if it is not utilized. This must be sufficiently descriptive to tell the customer of the genuine nature of the food and to distinguish it from other goods with which it may be confused. The majority of products will fall into this category and will require a name that is descriptive.

Aside from that, the net amount, retail selling prices, consumer care information, lot/code/batch number, and date marking should all be specified clearly. “Date of production or packaging” and “Expiry/Use by” must be indicated on the label, according to the requirements. The phrase "Best before" might, however, be used as optional or supplementary information.

If your food product has two or more ingredients (including water and additives), you must include them all under the header "Ingredients" or another appropriate heading that includes the word "ingredients." Ingredients must be mentioned in weight order, with the principal component stated first, based on the amounts required to prepare the cuisine.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had previously issued the Food Safety and Standards (packaging and labelling) Regulations, 2011, but the Food Authority has now decided to split FSSAI rules for packaging into two: (i) the Food Safety and Standards (packaging) Regulations, and (ii) the Food Safety and Standards (labelling and display) Regulations.
